No 158 CHORal Total on a Blüthner

J. S. Bach/F. Busoni: Zehn Choral-Präludien • F. Liszt: Variationen [über »Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen«], LW A214 • C. Franck: Prélude, choral et fugue, M 21
Artists: Alexander Paley (piano)
After his acclaimed appearance at the 2023 Bachfest, Alexander Paley continues his series of concerts on a Blüthner piano, bringing with him a select programme. With a number of extremely demanding works by some very different 19th-century piano giants, he will be examining the festival title, CHORal Total. Whether Busoni, Liszt or Franck, all three composers allude to Bach, yet with every note make it clear that in their chorale arrangements and variation suites their foremost intention was to go their own way – to make the old genres handed down by Bach reception into the 19th century fit for the modern concert. The rarely performed pieces are of overwhelming effect and with the virtuosic Paley, who won the Leipzig Bach Competition in 1984, are in the best of hands. Hear and be amazed!
