Moritzbastei

Leipzig, Moritzbastei

The Moritzbastei (Moritz bastion) was designed to serve as a bastion when it was constructed between 1551 and 54 under the supervision of Hieronymus Lotter. It was stormed for the first time during the Thirty Years’ War before it completely lost its military function in the course of the Seven Years’ War. Thereafter, it was converted into a warehouse for trading goods and became a workplace of bell founders, gunpowder makers and printers. Based on the remaining walls of the Moritzbastei, Germany’s first non-denominational secondary modern school was built between 1796 and 1834. The school became destroyed by bombs during World War II. On their search of suitable premises for a student club, students discovered the remains of the Moritzbastei in 1973/74. They convinced the university and the city council to reconstruct the Moritzbastei. In 1974, the Moritzbastei was handed over to the students of the university. Today, it is run by a commercial organisation.
