Hosts Wanted!

The XXII International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig is organized by the Leipzig Bach Archive in cooperation with the Leipzig Academy of Music »Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy« and will take place on July 13–25, 2020 in the disciplines of organ, voice and cello/baroque cello.

We would like to offer accommodation with host families in Leipzig for the international participants – young musicians and music students between the ages of 16 and 32 – and hope that the hosts will not only accommodate their guests, but would also like to take an active part in their competition experience.

The hosts should be able to provide the participants with their own room. The accommodation should not be too far away from the city center and have good connections to public transport. Guests must be able to arrive from July 12, 2020 and remain until July 26, 2020.

If possible, the young musicians should also be able to practice in the room (cellists, singers), i.e. the hosts and any neighbors should not object to the associated noise level. The availability of a keyboard instrument (piano, harpsichord) would be beneficial for the preparation of the contestants, but is not a required condition for the provision of the accommodation. It would also help the young organists if they could have access to a church organ for practicing. Perhaps there are hosts with good connections to a church community. Of course, this too is not a required condition for becoming a host. Needless to say, it would be beneficial if the hosts could communicate in English at least to some extent. However, we also expect many German competitors and can take the language skills into consideration when assigning the accommodations.

We would be pleased if the hosts would take an interest in the competition events. Regrettably, the competition cannot grant any financial compensation to the hosts. To make up for this, the host families will receive 2 season tickets per family, entitling them to free access to all competitive recitals, as well as 2 additional tickets for the prizewinners’ concert. After the competition, the hosts will receive a CD with the recording of the prizewinners’ concert from the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas’ Church).

To enable assigning the respective quarters to the participants, the host’s details must be entered in the response form. Please save, fill out and print the form and send it to the Bach Archive (Künstlerisches Betriebsbüro, Thomaskirchhof 15/16, 04109 Leipzig) by March 15, 2020.
For questions please contact staff member Greta Anton, anton@bach-leipzig.de.
We will ask your potential guest to contact you by May 20, 2020, at the latest.
